flying in

Starting in September, Iceland Air will send out weekly "Lucky Fares" notices via e-mail that get quite low (we have seen them as low as $260, not including taxes). You can sign up to receive these, or you can just log onto the site to check the Lucky Fare prices (you'll have to create an account, either way).

If you have some extra vacation time, check out the option of flying to Europe and "stopping over" in Iceland, for no additional fees, for up to seven days:

For some reason, there don't seem to be many flights leaving BWI, JFK, or Logan (to return you to your home airport) after 8pm. There is a good chance that you might either have an extremely tight connection window on your way back from Iceland, or you will end up having to stay over and catching the last leg of your flight back the next morning. We're really sorry about this unexpected extra day and expense.

dates

We plan to be in Iceland from October 30th to November 8th. If your goal is to make it to all planned events, you would need to leave the US no later than the night of the 2nd.

The wedding rehearsal is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, November 2nd, so members of the actual wedding party should plan on leaving the States no later than the night of November 1st.

The earliest departure after the wedding is the late afternoon of Sunday, November 5th. All the flights back to the States leave Keflavík around the same time (5pm-ish), so you will have plenty of time to join us for brunch and take a dip in the Blue Lagoon Sunday morning. (The Blue Lagoon is right near the airport, extremely convenient!)

getting from the airport to downtown reykjavík

Keflavík International Airport is 31 miles from Reykjavík. It is a straight shot to downtown, so you shouldn't get lost if you are on your own. If you aren't renting a car, you can take the Flybus to downtown Reykjavík. Its schedule is based on airline arrival and departure times, and offers free pickup at most hotels for the return trip. The cost per trip is approximately $15 per person.

renting a car

Driving is pretty easy in Iceland, and having a car is handy for day trips. If you plan to stay and visit just the downtown area, then you can get away with not having a car.

Avis seems to offer the lowest prices available, if you use the Avis Worldwide Discount Code: K817625. The rental fee, all inclusive, totals about $55 per day (if you get a small car).
